Specialized Ecological Services has successfully used warm-season prairie grasses to insure a permanent, low-maintenance cover for several landfills in the mid-west. Keeping project costs to a minimum, Specialized Ecological’s Senior Botanist designs native prairie mixes to best suit the specific characteristics of the project site
An outstanding example of our work is Paxton II Landfill in Chicago, Illinois. This site gained special recognition by the Illinois EPA in their Winter 2003 issue of Environmental Progress. Once described as “an environmental disaster waiting to happen”, Paxton II now demonstrates successful remediation of an environmental hazard. It also demonstrates the resilience of wildlife, even near a major metropolitan area. Mice, hawks, and white-tailed deer have been observed on the site during vegetation monitoring visits.
